Job Summary:



The Boilermaker will be responsible for the fabrication, assembly, installation, and maintenance of steel structures, chutes, tanks, conveyors, and platework components related to SMPP (Structural, Mechanical, Platework, and Piping) construction. The role demands high precision, technical skill, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards on a live construction site.

Key Responsibilities:



Fabrication & Assembly

  • Interpret and work from fabrication drawings, isometric sketches, and specifications.
  • Cut, shape, drill, and weld steel components using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
  • Fabricate and assemble structural steel, platework, supports, brackets, chutes, tanks, and ducting as required.
  • Perform layout and marking according to design drawings and quality standards.
  • Install fabricated steel components on-site according to project requirements and alignment specifications.
  • Carry out repair work on damaged structures and perform maintenance on steel installations as required.
  • Align and fit structural components using measuring instruments and levels to ensure compliance with design tolerances.
  • Conduct visual inspections on fabricated and installed components to identify defects or non-conformance.
  • Ensure welds, joints, and structural alignments meet quality and safety standards.
  • Report any fabrication or installation discrepancies to the supervisor and recommend corrective actions.
  • Work in compliance with site-specific safety standards, company policies, and occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and hazard identification activities.
  • Use appropriate PPE and always maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Coordinate daily tasks with the site supervisor and other trades such as welders, riggers, and fitters.
  • Communicate progress, issues, and material requirements clearly and proactively.
  • Support other team members during critical lifts, alignments, and structural adjustments.
  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
  • Trade-tested Boilermaker certification (Red Seal or equivalent recognized qualification).
  • 3–5 years of experience in structural steel and platework fabrication and erection in the construction or mining industry.
  • Experience working on SMPP projects is essential.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction and fabrication drawings.
  • Proficiency in using oxy-acetylene, arc welding, MIG/MAG welding, grinders, and cutting torches.
  • Familiarity with site rigging and lifting practices is advantageous.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to delivering quality workmanship.
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures in heavy construction environments.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces when required.
  • Team player with good communication and time management skills.
