Job Summary:



The Instrument Technician E&I is responsible for the installation, calibration, testing, commissioning, maintenance and fault-finding of instrumentation and control systems on construction and operational sites. The role ensures that instruments, control loops and associated E&I equipment are installed and maintained in accordance with approved drawings, project specifications, manufacturer requirements, safety standards and applicable regulatory requirements. The Instrument Technician E&I supports reliable plant operation by ensuring accurate measurement, control and protection systems.

Key Responsibilities:



Technical Execution:

• Install, terminate, calibrate, test and maintain field instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow and level instruments, control valves, switches, transmitters and associated equipment.

E&I Coordination:

• Coordinate instrumentation activities with electrical, mechanical, piping, commissioning and construction teams to ensure work fronts, interfaces and project milestones are achieved.

Quality Control:

• Inspect completed instrumentation work to ensure compliance with P&IDs, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, cable schedules, instrument datasheets, project specifications and quality requirements. Identify and rectify defects or punch-list items.

Safety Management:

• Comply with site HSE requirements, permit-to-work procedures, isolation and lockout/tagout requirements. Conduct work safely around electrical systems, process equipment, pressurised systems and hazardous areas where applicable.

Technical Support:

• Provide technical assistance to E&I teams and support junior technicians and artisans with fault-finding, calibration, installation and testing activities where required.

Tools and Equipment:

• Ensure calibration equipment, test instruments, tools and consumables are correctly used, maintained and stored. Report damaged or out-of-calibration equipment promptly.

Documentation:

• Maintain accurate calibration certificates, loop-check sheets, inspection records, test packs, red-line drawings, progress records and other E&I documentation required for handover and commissioning.

Fault-Finding:

• Diagnose faults on instrumentation, control loops and associated electrical/control systems. Identify root causes and implement appropriate corrective action to minimise downtime and rework.

Compliance:

• Ensure instrumentation and E&I work complies with approved project documentation, manufacturer instructions, client requirements, applicable standards and relevant Namibian occupational health and safety requirements.

Communication:

• Communicate effectively with E&I supervisors, engineers, commissioning personnel and other disciplines regarding work status, technical queries, defects, changes and commissioning requirements.

Qualifications and Experience:



• Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
• Recognised Instrumentation / Industrial Instrumentation trade qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent relevant technical qualification is required.
• Relevant training or certification in process instrumentation, PLC/DCS systems, hazardous areas, calibration or E&I systems is advantageous and must be maintained where applicable.
• 3-5 years of relevant instrumentation and E&I experience within construction, mining, industrial, process plant or similar project environments.

Technical Skills:

• Strong knowledge of field instrumentation, calibration, control valves, instrument tubing, loop checking, P&IDs, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings and E&I installation practices. Competent in the use of multimeters, process calibrators and relevant diagnostic/test equipment.

Technical Competence:

• Ability to work independently, follow technical instructions and drawings, identify defects and complete work accurately to required quality standards.

Fault-Finding:

• Diagnose faults on instrumentation, control loops and associated electrical/control systems. Identify root causes and implement appropriate corrective action to minimise downtime and rework.

Communication:

• Communicate effectively with E&I supervisors, engineers, commissioning personnel and other disciplines regarding work status, technical queries, defects, changes and commissioning requirements.

Organizational Skills:

• Strong planning, organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple work fronts and priorities in a project environment.

Safety Awareness:

• Strong understanding of electrical and instrumentation hazards, isolation and lockout/tagout, permit-to-work requirements, process safety and safe use of test and calibration equipment.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability and medical fitness to work on construction and operational sites, including at heights, in confined spaces and in varying weather or plant conditions where required.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of site supervision, including walking work areas, climbing access structures and standing for extended periods.

Work Environment:

Project/site working hours and roster arrangements will apply in accordance with operational requirements, the employment agreement and applicable Namibian labour requirements. Overtime may be required based on project demands.
