Job Description:
Job Summary:
The Material Controller – Construction (E&I) is responsible for the accurate receipt, storage, issuance, and tracking of materials required for the E&I scopes of work at the project site. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the efficient flow of materials from procurement through to construction, maintaining accurate records and supporting construction productivity by avoiding material shortages or delays.
Tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, inspect, and verify incoming materials against delivery documentation (packing lists, purchase orders, etc.).
- Manage and maintain the site laydown yard and warehouse in accordance with project safety and housekeeping standards.
- Ensure proper storage and preservation of materials, especially critical components such as piping, structural steel, and mechanical equipment.
- Tag and label materials clearly for traceability and identification according to project specifications.
- Maintain up-to-date inventory records, including receipts, issues, returns, and stock levels.
- Coordinate the timely issuance and delivery of materials to construction teams based on work fronts and priorities.
- Liaise with procurement, logistics, construction supervisors, and planners to forecast material needs and identify shortages or delays.
- Monitor material wastage and assist in the reconciliation of material usage.
- Ensure all surplus, damaged, or rejected materials are properly documented and reported.
- Utilize material tracking systems and tools to ensure accurate data capture and reporting.
- Assist in the preparation of material reports and support audits or inspections as required.
- Qualifications and Experience:
- Grade 12 certificate with a technical diploma or relevant post-matric qualification in supply chain, logistics, or construction management preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of material control or warehousing experience on construction or mining projects, particularly within E&I scopes.
- Sound knowledge of material handling processes and inventory control systems.
- Experience with structural steel, mechanical components, piping, and platework materials.
- Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Excel and material management software.
- Familiarity with construction drawings and the ability to match materials to isometric and general arrangement (GA) drawings.
- Good organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Physically fit and willing to work in an outdoor construction environment.

- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic construction environment.

- Safety Practices: Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and ensure that safety procedures are followed.

Work Environment:
- Hours: Standard business hours. Potential overtime may be required based on project demands and logistics needs.
